the last exit

I remember hearing a comedian (I think it was Pete Holmes, but I won’t swear it was) recently lamenting the loss of the time period between wanting to know a piece of information and knowing it, due to the Internet, smartphones, etc.

He joked that if you wanted to know where Tom Petty was from, you had to wonder about it patiently, maybe for years, until you meet someone wearing a Heartbreakers t-shirt and ask them where Tom Petty is from. Now it’s this easy.

I realized that I pretty much grew up without this phenomenon. There was no schism between TV and the radio and the Internet, for the most part. Just an endless flow of information about whatever I was curious about.

So I’m starting to romanticize those little slivers of culture that I encountered outside of the Internet, and got to be mystified, or in this case, disturbed by.

This video is one of those things. I remember being over at Hutch’s house in seventh grade, probably, watching VH1 at one o’clock in the morning, and this video came on. We were confused and scared shitless. We got to wonder for years what the hell this video was, and then the satisfaction of knowing exactly what it is, years later.
