Van Helsing Boom Box by Man Man

This song belongs in my top 10 of the ’00s. This is the style of Man Man song I enjoy the most, and I think the spaz-out-shit-crazy tracks make me appreciate these quiet ones even more.

Summer 2006, Pitchfork’s… what did they call it? “Infinite Mixtape” or something? I fell in love with this song. I think they’re my favorite live band by a mile, and Honus Honus is a pretty nice dude.

Also, apparently they’re coming out with a new album this year, and Wiki says that they recorded it in Omaha with Mike Mogis… weird…

Little Boxes - Man Man (2007)

Opening a bit of a can of worms here. 

In 2006, the producers of the Showtime television series Weeds hatched a plan that launched tens of versions of Malvina Reynold’s infamous tune Little Boxes. Having used the song as their theme over the first season, once they were picked up for a second, they decided to invite some of the best and brightest of the music business (everyone from Randy Newman to Jenny Lewis to Linkin Park) to contribute new versions for the opening credits. 

Here’s a personal favorite version by Man Man, a crazed band of hairy-sounding misfits. They’re well worth your time, if you have the time. 

I love Man Man so much - I’ve seen them twice now, and got to chat with Ryan (Honus Honus) once before the show in Little Rock. He gave me a Man Man button for free.

Their live show is so brilliant and manic - even if you never listen to their recorded stuff, you should make a point to see them. Though I don’t know what they’re up to these days since this is going on.
