bills bills bills (harmonimix) by destiny’s child

“Harmonimix” was a name James Blake used for some of his remixes a while back. It’s pretty cool.

the wilhelm scream (james blake cover) by the bamboos ft. megan washington

woah… It’s kind of an awesome idea to take a song like “The Wilhelm Scream” and pretend that it’s a James Blake remix of a song that doesn’t exist yet, and then make that song.

CORRECTION: a little light Wiki’ing tells me that “The Wilhelm Scream” is actually James Blake covering his dad. Wild. Why did no one tell me this??

a milli (flying lotus remix) by lil wayne

Lil Wayne is unstoppably prolific, and somewhere in the middle of that, it looks like he kind of stopped caring about the beats that he raps over, perhaps in a misguided effort to rap over all of the beats. Maybe no one told him that he’s making enough money to hire good producers for all of his tracks. Maybe he’s just trying to make the Guinness book before he hits 30.

Anyway, the reason I don’t really listen to much Lil Wayne because I don’t usually dig the production, (unless it’s a Bangladesh/Maestro/Kanye beat) but this Flying Lotus remix of “A Milli” is one of my favorite Lil Wayne tracks, as well as the James Blake/Harmonimix remix of the same song.

James Blake /// “Unluck” /// James Blake

The James Blake album: it’s like adult contemporary … for people who think Bon Iver songs aren’t clicky enough.

I like James Blake alright - but I see what you’re getting at.

The way I look at it, James Blake is/was a dubstep producer, so the more of this type of James Blake music gets made, the less dubstep gets made, and I think that’s an even trade.

Limit to Your Love (Feist cover) by James Blake

Sometimes I daydream about what kind of music I’d make if I were a talented musician. I think that James Blake has such a cool aesthetic, embracing the full potential of his role as a producer and the control that allows (some of his music doesn’t even feature his voice), as well as having a fine ear for soul and a fairly expressive voice.

I wish I had his mind, skill or voice… although I could play the piano on this track.

I was browsing through Pitchfork’s “Best New Music” section

catching up, taking it all with a grain of salt, noticing that some of my favorite albums of the year are on there, as well as noticing with an inappropriate smugness that I’ve heard absolutely nothing about some of these artists since “Best New Music.”

Anyway, I thought it was high time that I grabbed Flying Lotus’ Cosmogramma since I really enjoyed a track from it that I got from a comp, as well as James Blake’s CMYK, since I really enjoyed that Feist cover he did.

As I was downloading these two albums, I went back to find the first Flying Lotus track I ever heard, a remix of “A Milli” by Lil Wayne, I found a blog post on hypemachine that had “A Milli” remixes by Flying Lotus and James Blake. Woah.

I know what you’re thinking: Andrew, that is one of the better stories I’ve heard this week.

Whatever, this is the Flying Lotus remix of “A Milli” and it’s amazing and it totally has the Gchat sound in it. This is the James Blake remix of “A Milli” and it’s totally aces, too, but second-place to Flying Lotus. We’ll see how the albums are.
